To Kill a Mockingbird              （week eight）



A novel by Harper Lee published in 1960. It was immediately successful, winning the Pulitzer Prize, and has become a classic of modern American literature. The plot and characters are loosely based on the author's observations of her family and neighbors, as well as on an event that occurred near her hometown in 1936, when she was 10 years old.


 It was adapted into an Oscar-winning film in 1962 by director Robert Mulligan, with a screenplay by Horton Foote. Since 1990, a play based on the novel has been performed annually in Harper Lee's hometown of Monroeville, Alabama.

To Kill a Mockingbird was Lee's only published book until Go Set a Watchman, an earlier draft of To Kill a Mockingbird, was published on July 14, 2015. Lee continued to respond to her work's impact until her death in February 2016, although she had refused any personal publicity for herself or the novel since 1964.
The book was made into the well-received 1962 film with the same title.

Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears        (week ten)


A West African Tale is a picture book by Verna Aardema in the form of a cumulative tale written for young children, which tells an African legend. In this origin story, the mosquito lies to a lizard, who puts sticks in his ears and ends up frightening another animal, which down a long line causes a panic.
In the end, an owlet is killed and the owl is too sad to wake the sun until the animals hold court and find out who is responsible. The mosquito is eventually found out, but it hides  to escape punishment. So now it constantly buzzes in people's ears to find out if everyone is still angry at it.



This story is a resource for teachers to teach the skill cause and effect!

The figure of Mother Goose is the imaginary author of a collection of fairy tales and nursery rhymesoften published as (Old) Mother Goose's Rhymes. As a character, she appears in one nursery rhyme.A Christmas pantomime called Mother Goose is often performed in the United Kingdom.

Mother Goose is generally depicted in literature and book illustration as an elderly country woman in a tall hat and shawl, a costume identical to the peasant costume worn in Wales in the early 20th century, but is sometimes depicted as a goose .

was a French author and member of the Académie Française. He laid the foundations for a new literary genre, the fairy tale, with his works derived from pre-existing folk tales.

The best known of his tales include  Cendrillon (Cinderella), Le Chat Botté (Puss in Boots), La Belle au bois Dormant (The Sleeping Beauty).

In 1697 he published Tales and Stories of the Past with Morals (Histoires ou Contes du Temps passé), subtitled Tales of Mother Goose .This “Mother Goose” has never been identified as a person, but used to refer to popular and rural storytelling traditions in proverbial phrases of the time.

Miss Potter
 is a 2006 Anglo-American biographical fiction family drama film directed by Chris Noonan. It is a biographical film of children's author and illustrator Beatrix Potterand combines stories from her own life with animated sequences featuring characters from her stories.



plot:
In 1902, in London, the spinster Beatrix Potter lives with her bourgeois parents.One day, Miss Potter offers her stories to a print house, and a rookie publisher, Norman Warne, who is delighted with her tales, publishes her first children's book. This success leads Norman to publish two other books, and Miss Potter meanwhile becomes the best friend of his single sister Millie Warne. Soon Beatrix and Norman fall in love with each other.This proves the first of many successes, offering her the possibility of escaping from both her parents' way of life and London.

Peter Rabbit

Peter Rabbit                (week six)

  a fictional animal character in various children's stories by Beatrix Potter.He first appeared in The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1902 and subsequently in five more books between 1904 and 1912.

Merchandise includes dishes, wallpaper,bags, and dolls.

In 1936, Walt Disney expressed interest in making a Peter Rabbit film. Beatrix Potter she refused and did not give him the rights!

Peter Rabbit appears in the 1971 ballet film, The Tales of Beatrix Potter. He also was featured in HBO's 1991 Storybook Musical adaptation of The Tale of Peter Rabbit, narrated by Carol Burnett.

There is an accurate replica of Potter's house and a theme park in Japan, and a series of Mr McGregor's gardens in one of the largest banks. Merchandisers in Japan estimate that 80% of the population have heard of Peter Rabbit.

Potter asserted that her tales would one day be nursery classics, and part of the "longevity of her books comes from strategy", writes Potter biographer Ruth MacDonald.She was the first to exploit the commercial possibilities of her characters and tales; between 1903 and 1905 these included a Peter Rabbit stuffed toy, an unpublished board game, and nursery wallpaper.
